Sumatra -  Part 1

SUMATRA  is the  largest  of the islands  that lie  entirely within  Indonesia.
Kalimantan and Papua have larger areas, but they share islands with other
countries.    I went to Sumatra twice: once in 1986, and again in 1988.

Lake Toba
A large lake in the caldera of a volcano that exploded about 75,00 years ago

Samosir Island
A large island, about 200 sq. mi., in the middle of Lake Toba, seat of the Batak culture.

Batak houses

A city near two volcanos, one of which, Mt. Merapi, was still active.
